The urban farm pod – Agronomic way of cultivation

Urban Farm Pod Capsule image

Are you staying in a metropolitan city where every square feet is as expensive as a diamond? Do you want to cultivate your own food? The urban dwellers are moving away from nature and farming, since they are busy with their daily chores. According to WHO, 70% of urban dwellers gets hyper tension and diabetic problems just after 35 years of life.

How can we improve our health condition? A very simple solution is to eat healthy organic food and say “NO” to processed and packed food.

A New York based Socio-Ecological design laboratory, Terreform ONE has developed a planter capsule with the dream of bringing agriculture and farming to the life of urban dwellers. This planter capsule, called The Urban Farm Pod can be used to plug in ecology into regions where farming and agricultural production is scarce.

Living Capsule Urban Farm pod

This living cabin is for urban nuclear families to produce daily herbs and veggies they need. The Urban farm pod uses the principle of Agronomy to grow food and at the same time the capsule serves other purposes like, maintaining air quality, algal energy production and also acts as bio luminescent light source. Agronomy involves application of various fields of science and technology like ecology, biology, genetics, plant physiology etc. to produce food and energy sources.

This ultra modern planter capsule has features to acclimatize to its environment like location lighting, and optimal nutrients. Terreform ONE claim that,

The pod archetype turns the food system itself into a visible artifact, a bio-information message system, and a functional space”

Check out more detailed description about the urban farm pod prototype by Mitchell Joachim, one of the co-founder and architect of Terreform ONE.

Features of Plug-In Ecology: Urban Farm pod

The Cabin sphere of prototype uses an under grid structure which is made of reclaimed flat packed materials. This makes it easy to assemble and disassemble and it can be grown easily by adding extra modules. It uses a robotic milled rotegrity ball structure and potting planters are attached to this spherical structure.

Urban farm pod interior

Interior of the Urban Farm pod can be used as a living space as well.

The irrigation system flows through the channels of planter and it provides sufficient water to the plants as and when required. The prototype uses the sleeves of potting elements to do agronomy tissue culture through micro propagation.

Designing urban farm pod

The prototype design work in progress at design laboratory of Terreform ONE Brooklyn, NY.

Individual modules of the farm pod’s spherical structure can be  used as planter and to do agronomy tissue culture.

Plug in Ecology Farm pod in detail

Just like other modern grow system, the urban farm pod also has a digital monitoring system to track light, water and nutrient requirement of plants grown in the capsules. This product has internet of things (IoT) enabled to transfer the data to web in order to control remotely using smart phones and tablets.

Terreform ONE’s vision

The future versions of farm pod will have a naturally growing modular structure over time and new form of mediated arboreal culture to enable the much better symbiotic relationship between biological and mechanical systems. The Plug in Ecology project will impose a healthy biological exchanges with urban dwellers and nature.

On the top end of things there is this concept hydroponic Kitchen Nano Garden system which can produce fresh and chemical free vegetables and herbs. It has a controlling mechanism for providing the essentials for plants, like water, carbon-dioxide, light and nutrients.

It can be placed just like the refrigerator in your kitchen and you can use water that you are using to wash dishes for watering these plants. You have the mechanism to control these inputs i.e; how much water to be used, when to be watered, how much light it requires for growth etc. It has built-in LED lighting to provide light which is needed for photosynthesis. Here we have another blog post on decorative indoor herb garden ideas to decorate your kitchen while remodelling

This concept was bought forward by the Car company Hyundai in 2010 and they got the Fast Company Idea Awards in the category commercial and industrial product.
